I loved La Rêve – it was my favorite show before it shut down. So when Wynn announced a brand new spectacle called Awakening, I was ecstatic.
Unfortunately, when it first premiered, it was met with mixed reviews. But Wynn has since “reimagined” it, taking into account guests’ feedback.
Although I didn’t see the original version, I recently saw the revamped one with my friend.
So, today, I’ll share the pros and cons of the new production. And I’ll let you know if it lives up to the hype of being the best show in town!

A Quick Show Summary
Awakening is a mythical adventure tale narrated by Anthony Hopkins. As the story unfolds, you’ll travel with the hero to different realms to complete a mission.
Each domain has extraordinary visuals like puppets, lasers, and couture costumes. At times, you’ll also see circus acts with aerialists, fire spinners, and rope acrobatics.
But the most surprising part is the magic – including one illusion never before done in Las Vegas.
The Plot
Darkness and Light have been banished by the creator of their world for defying the rules. Light has been split into three crystals, while Darkness is in another realm.
Unfortunately, without Light, Darkness is ruining the world with all her sadness. So, the story’s hero, IO, must stop her before all light disappears forever.
IO’s mission:
Capture Darkness’s power and Light’s crystals to reunite the pair and save the world!
Pros: What’s Great About Awakening
With over $120 million spent and top industry names behind it, the production has some incredible features!
Here’s what I enjoyed most:
Wynn’s High-Tech Stage
Awakening’s 60-foot stage is the most technically advanced performance space in Las Vegas.
It’s made entirely of glass, but specifically dark glass, so it’s similar to a mirror. It also rotates and moves up and down 20 feet and splits into eight different levels.
All that splitting makes it feel intensely action-packed. (I often felt like I was in a video game!)
There’s also transparent LED film embedded in the glass for video projection. So, depending on the scene, you’ll see different images on the floor.
The stage isn’t just in front of you, though. High on the ceiling are glass bridges that serve as staircases for the cast.
These snake-like bridges lower when Darkness is present, fitting the evil vibe perfectly:
Gorgeous Theater
I’ve always loved Wynn’s theater. I think it’s the prettiest and most elegant in town and reminds me of the seating at the O show.
But it’s even more beautiful now that everything’s been updated for the new spectacle.
For instance, when you first walk in, you’ll see a prism display that gives a hint of what’s to come:
Inside the theater, you’ll sit in new chairs and experience the latest sound and lighting systems.
And thanks to the rotating stage, everyone has a fantastic view, no matter where you are in the venue:
There’s also a new concession area with chocolate chip cookies, popcorn, and themed drinks. And immaculate restrooms that are exclusively for show attendees.
Visually Captivating Scenes
The set design for Awakening is phenomenal! Every scene or “realm” makes you believe you’re in a different location.
One minute, you’re at a party with Darkness that feels like you’re inside a club with its techno music and lasers:
Next, you’re on an underwater adventure in the ocean, where you’ll encounter different sea creatures.
Soon after, you’ll visit the earth’s realm with its burning land and glistening rocks. Looking down on this scene was like viewing it from space:
Puppetry & Props
The production has the most beautifully crafted puppets I’ve ever seen. The man behind them is Michael Curry, who’s worked with Disney and on Wynn’s previous production, La Rêve.
For Awakening, Mr. Curry designed the giant version of Light in the earth realm:
He also created a fantastical beast, two scary-looking lieutenants, and the beautiful Phoenix that appears out of thin air.
But my favorite part of the entire performance was the water realm scene. There was a moment when a whale came out and swam around the theater.
It was so life-like that, at first, I couldn’t tell if it was a theatrical prop or a hologram. I also loved all the jellyfish in this scene, too:
Easy To Follow Narration
Awakening’s narration is the most well-told story in town. So you can sit back and enjoy it without concentrating too hard.
For instance, the show starts with Light appearing and telling you what has happened in the world. Then, you’ll meet the Storyteller who introduces you to IO and guides her on her mission.
And finally, as a transition between each scene, Anthony Hopkins provides a voiceover narration. So you’ll always get a brief recap of the scene you just saw and an idea of what’s to come.
Cons of the Show
Despite the impressive features above, I wish a few aspects of the spectacle were different.
It’s Not About Good vs Evil
First, I was under the impression that Awakening was a tale of good versus evil. At least, that’s what I was told when I called.
But after seeing the production, it’s not really about that.
Instead, the show concerns two former lovers (Light and Darkness) and IO’s quest to reunite them.
So, while it’s true that IO must confront the forces of Light and Darkness, it’s not a battle between light and dark.
And even though light and dark imply good and evil, I wouldn’t describe the characters that way.
It’s more like they’re both troubled souls.
In the water realm, Light worships material possessions, money, and himself. In the earthly realm, he lives in fear. And in the air scene, his desires are fulfilled by a pleasurable society.
With Darkness, all we know about her is that she always seems angry. I assume that’s from past hurt she’s not aware of.
So, because I was expecting something different, the plot was a little disappointing for me.
Air Realm Could Be Better
Of all the scenes, the air realm was my least favorite. Although it’s been toned down in the revamped version, it’s still very sensual.
For instance, I thought a certain feature on the ladies’ costumes was unnecessary. And the initiation ceremony was also strange, considering IO was “under the influence.”
But the scene raised even more questions for me when the Storyteller revealed the connection between IO and Light at the end.
Perhaps I’m overanalyzing it, but I think the production would be better if the realm were not about desire. But instead, it featured a different part of Light’s personality.
Awkward Speaker Placement
Awakening’s sound system is unique because it creates an immersive experience.
You’ll hear sound from four directions: above, below, in front, and next to you, thanks to the speakers at every seat.
But, unlike other Las Vegas shows, those individual speakers aren’t inside the headrest. Instead, they’re on your left and right sides, inches from your ears.
While that sounds like it would be amazing, the ear speakers created some problems for my friend and me.
For instance, we couldn’t talk to each other without bumping our heads on a speaker. I also noticed that the guy in front of us hit his head every time he adjusted in the chair.
Additionally, because of the speaker placement, no cup holders are at your seat (unless you buy Topaz tickets). So our drinks had to be on the ground, making them inconvenient to access.
Sound Is Too Loud
The part I disliked the most, though, is that the production is just too loud.
I don’t know if that’s due to the overall decibel level or the chair speakers, but even after wearing foam earplugs, I left with my ears ringing.
So because of what I experienced, I suggest bringing ear protection with you. And be sure to get yourself a good pair that will fit tightly.
My Las Vegas Review & Rating
- Overall rating: 3.9/5.0
Although it’s not marketed as a variety show, I was surprised that Awakening had many different acts. From comedy to aerialists and even magic, there’s something in it everyone will enjoy.
Many aspects, like the stage, puppetry, and special effects, are also the best in Las Vegas. So I think it’s worth going for those elements.
(I’d probably go back again just to see the whale!)
But I still think the performance needs a few more tweaks before I’d call it a favorite.
As I mentioned earlier, I’m not in love with the story. I think a true good vs evil plot, with good winning in the end, would be better. (The team already has the dark symbolism nailed!)
And I’d really like to see a revamp of the air realm scene. For me, that detracted from the show rather than enhanced it.
I also feel it could use a few more acrobatic stunts. Or an extended aerial performance, with less time on the ground and more time flying above the audience.
But other than those things, it might be an excellent choice for you – if you:
- enjoy laser shows & clubs
- appreciate an elegant venue
- like magic
- want to see incredible puppets
- prefer high-tech, modern experiences
- want to hear original music
- love fashion
Awakening at Wynn: FAQs
Below are some of the questions guests often ask about the production.
What is the dress code for Awakening?
Awakening’s dress code is resort casual attire. So wearing jeans and shorts is acceptable, or you can dress up.
The only clothing items that aren’t permitted are swimsuits and flip-flops. I would also suggest not wearing any see-through attire.
How long is the Awakening show at Wynn Las Vegas?
Wynn’s Awakening run-time is 80 minutes. So, if you see the 7:00 pm show, it should be over around 8:20 pm. And if you go to the 9:30 pm performance, you should be out by 10:50 pm.
Is Awakening ok for kids?
There are some aspects of this Las Vegas production that I think kids will enjoy. And that’s because many of the scenes felt like they were straight out of a Disney movie.
For instance, the water realm reminds me of being in the sea with the Little Mermaid.
And the character Darkness looks like she’s the wicked queen from Snow White. She even has a red orb that resembles an apple!
But there are other parts that, if I were a parent, I might be hesitant to let my children see.
Although kids may not understand what they’re watching, the air realm is seductive. Additionally, images that imply a specific action are on the video screens during the scene.
So, if you’re looking specifically for a kid-friendly option where they can have fun, I recommend something else. Some of my favorites for children are Mat Franco and Adam London.
What’s the Awakening age limit?
Kids 5 and up can attend Awakening but need a ticket to see the performance. Additionally, guests from 5 to 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult.

Other Reviews
I did a quick guest survey as I walked out of the theater, talking with others to get their thoughts.
And from my interviews, the reviews of the new show are still mixed. About half the people loved it and thought it was the best thing they’d ever seen, while the other half thought it was just okay.
Nobody I spoke with at the hotel, though, said they felt like they wasted their time or money.
So, if you’re unsure if it’s a good fit, maybe get the lowest-priced tickets. That way, you’re not out so much if it’s not your favorite.
And really, the seating is done so well in the venue that you’ll have a good view no matter where you sit.
But I suggest checking out my Awakening seating guide to ensure you have the best experience possible. 🙂
